2.15. Check of brake system
THE GENERAL DATA

Following signs can testify to malfunction in brake system:

  – The car pulls aside by pressing a brake pedal;
  – The scratch of brakes is audible;
  – Excessively free wheeling of a pedal of a brake;
  – A pulsation of a pedal of a brake;
  – Leak of a brake liquid, etc.

Disk brakes
PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Check up a thickness of brake overlays through an aperture in a support (are specified by arrows).
2. For exact check of a thickness of brake overlays and their condition remove supports of brakes and brake overlays. Clear overlays and check up a thickness and a condition of a frictional material.
3. Measure a thickness of a brake disk by means of a micrometer. Examine a disk surface on presence of deep scratches or flutes.
4. Check up all brake tubes and hoses on presence of damages or deterioration. Check up reliability of fastenings and connections.

Back drum-type brakes

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To check up a thickness of a frictional material brake колодок, without removing a brake drum, remove rubber заглушку (it is specified by an arrow) and examine Pads.
2. For more careful check turn off two fixing screws in the centre of a brake drum and remove a drum.
3. Clear the mechanism of a brake by means of means for clearing of brakes.
4. Measure a thickness of a frictional material brake колодок. If the material height over heads of rivets is less 1,5 mm, Pads it is necessary to replace.
5. Check up a condition of springs of the mechanism of a brake. Examine the wheel cylinder on presence of traces of leak. Check up integrity of covers of the cylinder. Check up brake tubes and connections.
6. Examine an internal surface of a brake drum on presence of cracks, deep scratches and wear tracks.

The vacuum amplifier of brake system

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Squeeze out a pedal of a brake and start the engine – the pedal should fall a little.
2. At the working engine squeeze out a brake pedal some times – the course of a pedal of a brake should not change.
3. Squeeze out a brake pedal, muffle the engine and keep a pedal in the pressed condition within 30 seconds – the pedal should not fall.
4. Start the engine, allow to it to work some minutes and muffle the engine. Squeeze out a brake pedal some times – the pedal course should decrease with each pressing.
5. If the brake pedal behaved differently, the vacuum amplifier means is faulty, and it is necessary to replace it.

Manual brake

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Count up number of the clicks necessary for reliable statement of the car on a manual brake. Adjust the mechanism of a manual brake if it is necessary.
2. Check up, that the manual brake could keep the car on an abrupt slope.
